Modes Couture

This week Think Monday think ATC challenged us to use Cloth + Paper.

During the holiday season, we’re using a lot of paper and sometimes also cloth. This is why I’d like to invite you to make one or several ATCs with these materials. I’m looking forward to see your ATCs.

I love working with fabric but I think I was lacking some creative juices...I went straight for the "clothing" theme. OH well, I still really like what I have made.

Her dress is all fabric...I stamped the image onto the pocka dot cloth and then again onto a grayish white. I cut out the dress from the pocka dot and then the wrap/bow from the grey and layered everything together.

I was very excited to use this stamp. A great friend of mine sent it to me a few months ago and I have not had time, nor the opportunity to use it until now.

Additional things that you can not see in the scan...I coated all the black words and table in Diamond glaze and the little whitish dots at the bottom and near the dress pattern cut out are actually miniature pearls. her necklace is coated in miniature pink seed beads.

Thanks for looking!

The Pen Pals

Today over at Think Monday Think ATC the theme is to create two ATCs with at least one image connecting the two ATCs. Bear in mind that the two ATCs should also look nice on their own.
A few weeks ago I received an order from Alpha Stamps in it was the Pen & Ink Clear Stamp Set and I just had to use it...after all I bought it LOL. So I sat down and worked out my design.

For the base of the ATC I decided to use old book print that I colored with the Weathered Wood Distress ink by Tim Holtz. I then stamped in black the "New Penmanship" images. The women are from a really old issue of Somerset Studios, I cut out two of the woman and put them on opposite sides of the ATC's. On a separate sheet of card stock I stamped the pen nibs and cut them out, before mounting them using 3D tape I spread black glitter all around the edges.

I finished this piece really quickly so I thought I would go see what Mixed Media Monday's challenge was...and low and behold it fit in with my current piece!
This week we have the wonderful Willy as our guest host. Willy has chosen “pens and pencils” as the theme. So the challenge to you is to make a piece, using something to do with pens and/or pencils. As always, the interpretation is open to your imagination. Have fun
On top of all that I am going to use these ATC's for the Alpha Stamps Monthly Lot o Rama...talk about combing projects! And i didn't even know I was.
Below I have included the original collage images that I took my "Pen Pal's" from and a larger image of the Pen Pal Left and Pen Pal Right.

Thanks for looking and as always any and all comments/critiques are welcome

Venus of Urbino Altered

I wanted to send Sarah a thank you for hosting the Cinderella swap so I decided to make an ATC. However all of my creative juices went on vaca for the moment so I hopped over to Think Monday Think ATC to get a little inspiration and boy did I.

This fascinating video Women in Art prompted me to make women in art the challenge of this week. Let yourself get inspired by it, or by portraits that touched your heart, or maybe there’s a favourite painter you’d like to show on an ATC.

I selected Titian’s Venus of Urbino as my base for the ATC. I just wish more of it could have fit onto the ATC. The word inspirational is a rub on and the butterfly coveres the images womanly aspects :) I then covered the image with a Mica Tile and attached it to the image using fishing wire and seed beads. Lastly I added some micro beeds areound the edges.

A little history: taken from Gardner’s Art through the Ages 11th edition volumn II by Tred S. Kleiner, Christin J. Mamiya and Richard G. Tansey

In 1538, at the height of his powers, Titian painted the so-called Venus of Urbino for Guidobaldo II, duke of Urbino. The title (given to the painting later) elevates what probably merely represents a courtesan in her bedchamber to the status of classical mythology, Indeed, no evidence suggest the duke intended the commission as anything more than a female nude for his private enjoyment. Whether the subject is divine or mortal, Titian based his version on an earlier (and pioneering) painting of Venus by Giorgione. Here, Titian established the compositional elements and the standard for reclining female nude paintings, regardless of the many variations that ensued. This “Venus” reclines on the gentle slope of her luxurious pillowed couch, the linear play of the draperies contrasting with her body’s sleek continuous volume. At her feet is a pendant (balancing) figure-in this case, a slumbering lap dog. Behind her, a simple drape both places her figure emphatically in the foreground and indicates a vista into the background at the right half of the picture. Two servants bend over a chest apparently searching for garments. (Renaissance households stored clothing in carved wooden chests called cassoni) to clothe „Venus“Beyond them, a smaller vista opens into a landscape. Titian masterfully constructed the view backward into space and the division of the space into progressively smaller units. With his facility, he used all of the resources of pictorial representation to create original and exquisite effect of the sort that inspired generations of painters in Italy and the north.

As in other Venetian painting, color plays a prominent role in Venus of Urbino. The red tones of the matron’s skirt and the muted reds of the tapestries against the neutral whites of the matron’s sleeves and of the kneeling girl’s gown echo the deep Venetian reds set off against the pale neutral whites of the linen and the warm ivory gold of the flesh. Viewers must study the picture carefully to realize the subtlety of color planning. For instance, the two deep reds (in the foreground cushions and in the background skirt) function so importantly in the composition as a gauge of distance and as indicators of an implied diagonal opposed to the real one of the reclining figure. Here, Titian used color not simply for tinting preexisting forms but also to organize his placement of forms.

Cleo’s Ode to St. Patrick’s Day

Today at Think Monday think ATC we were challenged to…

This week I chose “Transparent Art” as our new theme.
Show us your ideas centred around transparency. Stamped on foil, or images printed on foil, thin plastic or mica tiles. Anything transparent is well suited to add even more depth to a card or an ATC. We’re already looking forward to see your great ideas!!!!!!!

Perfect! I have a bunch of Alpha Stamps Transparency’s that I have wanted to play with so out they came. I chose The Cleo de Merode image because she was the perfect ATC size. But where to go from there?

I didn’t want the background behind her to be to busy so I selected a green textured cardstock and embossed swirls using a greenish embossing powder. I then attached the image by sewing what seams like billions of mini green beads on. I followed the swirl pattern behind her.

As a finishing touch I added some jewels that mirrored the shape on Cleo’s headpiece, dangling from the bottom with more of the green seed beads.

Unfortunately due to the 3D effect of all the bead work it was difficult to get a good scan. The overall piece is not nearly this dark. if you click on the image it will become much larger and give you more detail.

I’m going to use this ATC in the monthly Lot o Rama at Alpha Stamps.
Hope you enjoyCaro

The Shape of Things to Come

Today at Think Monday Think ATC the challenge is…

This week, I’d like to take you to the colourful world of fashion. I’m far from being a fashion victim, but this is not only about the most recent trends, but possibly about the gorgeous robes of the renaissance and other eras, or the look of the 20s, dresses from Bollywood films and carnival costumes, or maybe still the crazy creations of the Paris Fashion Shows. This is a very diversified theme and we can’t wait to see your ATCs

This is a pretty common theme that I work into my pieces regardless of the challenge so I decided to focus on stamps that I normally do not use and combine them with ephemeral that does not typically go with the theme.

I stamped the woman from Oxford Impressions on transparency. Behind her I used a bright yellow paper and covered it with a collage image from Paula’s Kit club and some white fabric type paper. I then layered a cut out from an actually dress pattern and some bright shell German scrap. I attached the transparency with green shell buttons that I sewed on and then used a stitching pattern rub on to finish the piece off.

The entire time I was working on this ATC I kept saying…”Oh I don’t like it, I don’t like it how to fix it…what to do???” I stuck to my original plan and once it was all done I do like it. Very different for me but I guess that is what I challenged myself to do.
The scan is a bit fuzzy in places due to the 3D sea shells…sorry.

Hope you enjoy

Fly Me to my Secret Garden

Today at Think Monday Think ATC the theme is…
Today we challenge you to make a triptych. The theme is open, only the form is important.Triptych (Greek for threefold) - a work of art that is divided into three sections, a middle part flanked by two (usually smaller) related works

I had to do a bit of research on triptych’s to see exactly what they were. Here is what I found at Wikipedia…
A triptych (pronounced "trip-tick") from the Greek τρίπτυχο [ tri'ptu.xo ] tri- "three" + ptychē "fold") is a work of art (usually a panel painting) which is divided into three sections, or three carved panels which are hinged together and folded. The middle panel is the larger one, and flanked by two lesser, related works.....

I have discovered that when the theme is open I have a much harder time coming up with a piece that I like. Many years ago I purchased Anxious Annie from Stampland Chicago but have been unsuccessful at using her. So today was the day, since I love her so much, that I was going to make her work. It took me all day to get it presentable.

The middle of the Triptych is standard ATC size 2 ½ x 3 ½. I used a taupe decorate paper; it has swirls which are a darker shade of taupe. On top of that I layered a transparency of a lily (made by stamping the image, coloring it, scanning it into the computer and printing it on transparency). And then I placed Anxious Annie, she is embossed with Tim Holtz distressing powder and colored with Prisma Colors. To finish off the ATC I rimmed the edges with copper embossing powder.

The two side panels are slightly smaller (as described) 1 7/8 x 3 ½ . They were created much the same way as the ATC except I embossed the key with the distressing powder directly onto the transparency. The Birds are cut from a vintage post card set from Stampington & Co.

I connected all three pieces with the copper flower embellishments from Alpha Stamps. They do not hold the pieces ridged so you can move the side panels up and down or keep them in a straight line.

I hope you enjoy.

Africa's Dangerous Days

Wow…what a wonderful Think Monday – Think ATC theme to come back from the sick bed to. I didn’t think I would have the energy to think about a design more or less actually complete an ATC…but I guess even the Flu can’t get the addicted down LOL

Anyway…the theme for Think Monday – Think ATC is… Although we didn’t have a real winter, I’m kind of always freezing. This is probably why I chose a theme associated with heat this time *gggggg* This week is all about the African continent. Whether the landscape, animals, human beings, or any idea you come up with. We’re already looking forward to see your ATCs!!

A few months ago I ordered some Collage images from Altered Pages among them was the image with the pyramids. When I opened the package that the collage sheet came in I also received some book pages…one of them had the title of “Dangerous Day’s” which to me seemed perfect with the theme.

When I was playing around with last weeks Theme Thursday I did some stenciling on a bright yellow fabric…When I saw it laying there I thought it was just right for today’s ATC. I spray glued it to a heavy piece of cardstock and continued layering from there.

I stamped the queenly image on transparency film and highlighted it with red and jade markers. The tag is alcohol inks mixed together with hieroglyphics stamped on top. Then transparent letters added. I wanted raffia for the ribbon but I was all out, this green ribbon was at the bottom of a “to be cleaned up” pile…now I don’t have to clean it up LOL.

I hope you enjoy!
I welcome all comments, be them critical or praise.

Soaring with Butterflies

Today’s theme for Think Monday - Think ATC is…

Looks like we can’t get enough of animals here. First we had cats, then birds, and now it’s insects There are so many of them - butterflies, dragonflies, bugs, spiders or ants - what kind of insects will you show us?

I really wished I had something other than butterflies, I am kind tired of the whole butterfly thing. But alas, it is the only insect that I have…I will be remedying that shortly LOL.

The background paper is a whole bunch of different butterflies scanned into photo shop, cropped, and laid out on a yellow orange background. I then stamped the woman in the frame (Great Impressions) on paper and scanned her into photo shop then printed her out onto transparency paper. With all that done…I could finally assemble.

To attach the transparency to the butterfly background paper I punched holes and threaded iridescent green DMC floss through the openings. I added a butterfly image that is 3D in the lover left hand corner. Punched a sun shape out of cardstock stained with Tim Holtz alcohol inks and hand wrote “Soar” onto it. Then I covered it with a page pebble and affixed it over the DMC floss…

It sounds like a lot of work but it really isn’t…

I am open to any and all comments be them critical or just nice…always looking to expand.

Hope you enjoy…

A Day With the Birds

Wow…this weeks Think Monday – Think ATC was really hard for me. Here are the instructions…

In our ATC Group, atc-inspirationen, Dani D. had challenged us with a special swap for some time. Every month she chose 2 items that were supposed to be combined on an ATC. As I hadn’t been able to take part in this challenge for time reasons, I thought I’d use TMTA as an opportunity to challenge both you and me.

What do you think? Will you participate?

Create an ATC on which the two items - child/children and birds - are combined in an overall picture.

At first I said to myself…well I guess I can’t participate I don’t have any stamps of Birds or children…then I remembered I have a dove and a new stack of Collage Sheets from Altered Pages…so I went from there. 2 hours later my design had completely changed, as you can see there is no Dove on the ATC, I remembered another bird I have (part of a larger stamp).

I have a very hard time with ATC’s on a regular basis but I am pleased with the way this turned out. The Bird house and the Birds are all 3D…

Hope you enjoy
