Hello most fabulous Read Alongers! Welcome to the second instalment of our Practical Magic Read Along. I'd first like to start with a big thank you to all of you that entered last week.  I am floored at the response and love reading each and every one of your answers.  Thank you so much for making this fun!

Now onto the fun part...the winner of the Superstition Bookmark and Black Glittered Clothespin Magnet OR PBS credit OR $5 Gift Certificate to Amazon is....

 Elisabeth
Congratulations!
Please let me know which prize you would like cmoh@earthlink.net

Now onto the Premonitions section of the book.  First a quick review of how this all works.

Below you will find a few questions. Answer them to the best of your knowledge in the comments section. Please number your answers (you do not need to re-type the questions) and leave a way for me to get in contact with you (e-mail, blog address, PBS nickname).

For each question you answer correctly I will enter your name in the cauldron for this weeks prize (1 PBS credit OR $5 Gift Certificate from Amazon OR a handmade gift by me). You have until Thursday September 8th at noon EST to answer the questions. The winner will be announced on next weeks Read Along questions and have 48 hrs to claim their prize (I will redraw at that point if contact has not been made).

2.  What is Gillian's tattoo of and where is it?
3.  What did Gillian slip into Jimmy's drink?

5.  What gifts does Kylie receive on her birthday from her mother and from Gillian?

Bonus:  What are the 3 things on Jimmy's ring?

Just for Fun:
I really wanted to incorporate Sally's moto onto the bookmark this week but the more I thought about her motto "Never believe what you can't see"  the less I liked it.  Do you believe in what you can't see?  Because I sure do!

For those of you that have seen the movie, what are you thinking about the major changes that were made?  To me this is the section where the screenplay really took a turn.

And what about those daughters of Sally's do you think they are too much like Sally and Gillian?  If so do you think the author did this intentionally?  Do you think the aunts are like Sally and Gillian?

Here's a little teaser, this is what you can make with what's inside that gold box.

Somewhere in this chapter it is mentioned that Gillian makes brownies with sprinkles.  I wanted to include a food themed gift because brownies are my favorite but the more I thought about it the more I decided I needed to mix the two sisters.  To me Sally would make hers from scratch, so that's what I did, but the kit you get is more like a brownie box so you don't have to do the hard part (homemade brownie mix, chocolate chips and sprinkles are all included).  Then I added my own touch I love mocha rum frosting, so I spread some on top to make sure that Gillian's sprinkles would stick.

For those of you that can't wait to see if you win the kit, here is the recipe.

The Owens sisters Brownies + A touch of Glitter Tart

For the brownies You will need:
1 1/2 cups sugar (less if you don't want your brownies as sweet)
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup cocoa powder (the good stuff!)
3 eggs
3/4 cup butter, melted
3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (again the good stuff!)
9X9 baking dish, greased

Preheat oven to 325

Mix the sugar, flour, cocoa, eggs and melted butter until just incorporated.  Add the chocolate chips stir until evenly distributed.

Pour into prepared 9x9 baking dish and pop into the oven for 30 minutes. Test with a bristle from a broom stick, it should come out clean (if not be careful that you didn’t stick it into a chocolate chip so test again). When done set aside to cool completely.

While baking/cooling prepare the Mocha Rum frosting

You will need:
½ cup melted butter
2/3 cup cocoa
3 cups confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-2 teaspoons dark rum

Stir Butter and coco together. In a separate bowl stir sugar and milk together alternating between the two. Mix the two together and add the remaining ingredients, stir until smooth. Or pull a Gillian toss it all in the mixer and set on medium (both work).

Once the Brownies are cool cover with the frosting and top with sprinkles.

Sit down with your favorite or current book and Enjoy!

I hope you are enjoying the book! Can't wait to see your answers. Please feel free to leave any type of comment about the book, I will answer them all and share my opinion (so if you don't like the book it's okay to say so).

Next week (Friday September 9th) the Questions will be about the Clairvoyance portion of the book. See you then!

Sometimes I believe in what I can't see and other times I'm a doubting Thomas. Depends on my mood and what I'm suppose to believe.
I think the daughters are a bit like their Mom's in some ways and vitally different in others. Kinda like "real" mothers & daughters ;o)))
Didn't see the movie but will find it and watch it after I finish the book. (that is always what I like to do! so glad that I read "Memoirs of a Geisha" before seeing that movie). I don't think the Aunts are much like Sally and Gillian in that they never left the house or got married or had children. Those things change us drastically. So even if they started out similarly life changed them drastically.

    4. lilacs
    5. A heart necklace from Mom and a bracelet and new hair-do from Auntie.

I do believe in what I can't see. How about those premonitions, that sixth sense etc. I honestly believe it saved my life once.

There are definite similiarities between the girls and Sally and Gillian. (Esp. made more apparent in this chapter.)It mirrors real life, I'm like my Aunt Lou. And we both love brownies! haha! So tempted to make your mocha rum yum brownies now. I love how your prizes follow the storyline of the book. So fun. You're doing a bang up job Caroline.

  5. Lucille...I am the exact oposit of you. i like to watch the movies before the books. I view movie watching and book reading as two seperate luxuries, I don't want to be sitting in a movie theatre or curled up on the sofa with a fuzzy blanket waiting for something to happen (that happened in the book) that the screenwriters changed or removed.

Wings...Love, hope and karma...all good things that I didn't even think about when I answered the question, so yes I most definantly beleive in what I can't see. Are you like Gillian, beleive in falling in love even if it is short lived?

Andrea...aw, thanks so much, so glad you are having fun, that's what this is all about. My husband asked me why I was doing this and I had to think about it a bit, the real answer is because I like to make other people happy. To me this is kinda like having people over to my house and having book club only better because I can sit here in my robe with blairing music on :) I am quite intreaged by how your 6th sence may have saved your life!

Glad everyone is having fun hope you all enjoy the next section of the book.

  6. 1. Gideon Barnes
    2. Green snake on her wrist.
    3. Beladonna aka nightshade into his drink.
    4. Lilacs.
    5. Mother a gold heart on a chain. Gillian gives her a silver bracelet with a turquoise stone plus a "make-over" with bleach, hair cutting and make-up to transform her into a woman.

Bonus: saguaro cactus, coiled rattlesnake and a cowboy on horseback.

Just for Fun: I still have a bookmark from when I was a little kid that says "some things must be believed to be seen" - picture is of a unicorn - I still love it and truely believe it - other people call it Faith or whatever. There are definitely things that are not explainable by logic or scienc (been watching to much bones! LOL).

The movie was good and definitely disney like - but I really like the book better - I think there as some major things left out like the fact she moved away and the girls were much older.

I think the daughters are definitely like Sally and Gillian and glad for the changes later in the book that happen to bring them closer. I believe that you see the similarity of the aunts to as it flows down the generations.

I was enjoying it so much I stayed up half the night reading it - now I have finished and cannot wait to see what everyone else has to say about the next section.

Do you believe in what you can't see? Yeah pretty much. I've never seen ghosts yet I believe they exist..etc.

For those of you that have seen the movie, what are you thinking about the major changes that were made? I honestly like most of the changes that were made for the movie. I still like the movie better..LOL

And what about those daughters of Sally's do you think they are too much like Sally and Gillian? If so do you think the author did this intentionally? Do you think the aunts are like Sally and Gillian?
They're not too much like Sally & Gillian. I think all 6 of them kind of resemble each other in some way. There's different traits in each one that can be linked to someone else.

  8. For me, Practical Magic was a fun, lighthearted read. I saw the movie shortly after it was released to video and didn't know it was a book until I saw the screen credits. The movie exaggerated the differences between the sisters, presumably to give them individual personalities, whereas the book had several hundred pages to get this point (more subtly) to the reader. The movie just divided personalities according to hair color - the 3 redheads and the 3 brunettes.

    (Ahem, redhead FTW!)

But what I found frustrating about the film is that allegedly the sisters are so close, but Gillian had never even met her nieces? She couldn't find time for a visit? And then she tells the little girls how much Sally loved their dad, but never met her brother in law? Yet Gillian calls out of the blue to ask for a ride from Arizona. The book does a better job of explaining the long separation between them.

I'm downright adamant about reading books before movies. I watched "The Wizard of Oz" as a child and loved it, but upon learning to read I also learned it was a book. I recall reading the book and being floored, wondering why all of this fabulous stuff wasn't in the film and pitying poor souls who never read it.

And I hate spoilers. I've read some books with shocking plot twists that aren't as effective on film. I would mention them here, but that might be a spoiler too. :)

  9. Jennifer...very insigtful observations there, I had never put the red hair connection together before.

I've noticed more and more that a lot of the movies I watch and tv shows I enjoy are based on books. It makes me want to go out and get the books. As I stated earlier I like to watch then read...I am in a very small percentage LOL.
