the cast was a hard one for me, but from the start i felt this was a harry potter meets hunger game. Also at the start I picked Johnny Depp as Tziga so I felt the cast need some tim burton actors/actresses - SO this is what i came up with I am sure it will bring some chuckles :) :) :)

for people to see how bad it had been for the prisoners..and also being buried alive...and to make people see what it was like to be a prisoner...to make them feel pity..

contentment...it wasnt a nightmare..it was a gift..a gift to anyone whose vision of a better world included himself surrounded by happy and peaceloving people.

1. Do you think people that are frightened feel pity?
This is a fascinating question. I would think so, if only when they see other people more frightened than themselves.
2. Are you surprised to learn that Laura's convict dream is about something that will happen in the future?
No, not really. I knew there had to be a twist about the Place, but I admit I hadn't anticipated it that way.
3. Will you read Dreamquake, the finally to this series?
I don't know. I'd like to see how the author finishes the tale, but it may have to wait until I finish a few other books first. If it reads like this one, I can finish it pretty quickly, so I may pick it up and the library one day.
4. Would you participate in another read along? Any suggestions?
YES! This was fun. I had anticipated a little more discussion, but realized that I was guilty of sending answers and then never looking back to see what other folks answered. Maybe a way to promote a wee bit of discussion? Not sure how you'd do that though. Thanks for the read!

I think the author included this character as an easy way to introduce the 7 types of dreamhunter abilities.

I would want to be a Sporoif to put people to sleep, and then I would want to be colorist, so I could influence them.

I'm at work and left my book at home so I can't reference it easily, so I"ll just skip to the discussion questions.

1. I think the author included Sandy as a love interest. This is YA, after all! Granted, there's not much love interest but perhaps there will be more of it in the sequel. Otherwise, I really don't understand why he's there.

2. Ok, so I guess I predicted the "Inception"-like ability to suggest an idea. Being a Colorist sounds cool, but being a soporif combined with a gifter would be a nice talent. Imagine being able to send people off to sleep with nice dreams individually edited for that person. I would think frazzled parents would enjoy being able to send a restless child off to a pleasant sleep with sweet dreams.

3. Even though it's YA, most people were exposed to fairy tales and other ideas of love and chivalry. Or at least I hope they were. Even an adolescent should be able to appreciate the grief of Tziga and finding comfort in dreaming about his late wife. I do think the author could have done a better job of explaining it, or even give some examples of dreams in which a gifter had altered a dream for Tziga.

I have no idea. Maybe a Healer? Or a Novelist. A healer sounds soothing, and a novelist sounds unique. (I often can see two sides to an argument, so maybe that is what is calling to me about a Novelist? You can see more than one perspective?)

I think Rose is more likely to doubt people because it is more in her personality.

No i think it is the right timing she leaves you questioning just like the girls do before they Try.

I am not adverse to the magic it is one way for her to get messages through but I would be interested to see how the story would have played out without magic. Magic never upsets me though :)

No, I didn't get that feeling. I'm not sure she's even thought of that aspect yet.

It has defined it a bit, confirmed some of what my imagination had already created. No, I don't think it is too late. I think too much too early and it wouldn't have been as useful, as we wouldn't have understood enough about the Place to know what details may be significant.

No, not yet. We'll see where the author goes with it, of course. Magic can enhance a story, or it can de-credit it. (I'm sure there is a better word than 'de-credit', but I can't seem to come up with it this morning, LOL!)

I finally caught up!

1. Rose remembers Tziga telling Grace that the camera is in a dry stream with a blue clay bed two days In.

2. Plants look to be on the verge of death. Grass is brittle and dusty, etc.

4. Nown can see things that have what he calls "soft fire", or things that have heat. Or at least I think so.

Discussion:

1. I actually never thought about people doubting what's in their mind due to the penumbra or manipulation of dreams. I would guess no, because even children of Dreamhunters are very sheltered from the practice of catching dreams. (On a side note, this really reminds me of the movie "Inception").

2. Yes! I think the description of the Place would have been better suited to Part II. Why couldn't we, the readers, journey with Laura on her Try to experience it as a Dreamhunter, and also as Rose, to experience it as everyone else does? I think things like this may be why some readers had a hard time getting into the book.

3. Undecided. I don't think there is much fantasy in the first place; it's more supernatural. Magic is an intriguing element in fantasy, supernatural, and paranormal stories, but is too often a deus ex machina. I think some authors truly don't know how to explain something or tie it up, so they just have a character develop a special power or find a magic talisman to fill in the plot holes. I like this world as it is, a seemingly normal one with boarding schools, vacation homes, and trains but with a somewhat eerie unknown place perfectly titled as The Place.

From the peanut gallery, running on 3 hours of sleep and a bag of M&Ms:

- Anyone else visualize this world as sort of steampunky? The description of leather dusters and veils, etc.

- I really want to know more about how dreams are caught and how they're used. It seems that more than one dream can be caught by more than one dreamhunter. So does the Place have a replenishing supply of dreams, or can they be exhausted? Will a nice dream like Starry Beach go extinct? Maybe that's why the Place appears dead. Once a dream is used, what happens to it? Does it waft back to the Place or is it gone forever?

3. The timing seems off. This country has a very regimented process and culture regarding the Place, the Rainbow Opera, the Try, an arbitrary age of 15 before attempting to enter the Place, etc. But it's only a recent discovery. Immediate culture shift and acceptance always bothers me in books (my key reason for finding The Handmaid's Tale to be frustrating). Are there people who resist the use of dreams?
